"Sight
is a faculty, seeing is an art. It is life itself that inspires you to see the everyday
celebration of earth's moods, weather, seasons, light and color that move in and out of
ephemeral shadows. Inspired by the patterns of light and color that alert my eye to shapes
and forms in rhythm, I search for the truth, to see, to make the invisible visible and the
unknown known. The process of seeing finds its way through earthly surfaces, and the
abstraction unites my feelings. It only seems natural, no great philosophy, I want my work
to be natural, one and the same with myself." |
William Chickillo is a plein-air painter and colorist who owes much to American realism
and the tradition of landscape painting as practiced by such masters as Albert Bierstadt,
Frederick Church, Thomas Cole and George Inness. His paintings, rendered with
spontaneity, intensity, fluidity and an understanding of space and light, depict the land
as he has seen it. Yet his keen sense of observation does not result in photographic
record, but rather a reflection of the land - its moods, its integrity, and its resilience
in the face of exploitation and human encroachment.
